Brief Summary of Episode #219

Video conferencing took the world by storm with the rise of COVID.

But with people steadily returning to the office, many are reverting to traditional email and teleconferencing for communication.

My guest, Ethan Beute, Chief Evangelist at BombBomb and author of Human-Centered Communication, thinks that’s a mistake.

“Video is just the most human experience you can deliver when you're forced to operate digitally and virtually,” Ethan told me.

Visual expression is so vital for building trust.

Without it, we must guess the true nature of authenticity and emotion in someone’s words.

Lack of context often gives rise to doubt. With doubt comes apprehension, which can lead to confusion and suspicion.

But through video, we humanize our messages by making them personal.

“People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care,” Ethan said. “People don’t judge your competence until they’ve judged your warmth.”

After all, people don’t place their trust in faceless suits - people trust people.
