Brief Summary of Episode #38

Twelve years ago, Yury Nabokov arrived in the U.S. from Russia with $500 in his pocket.

He landed in a small village in Maine where he took a job at a convenience store. Seven days a week, Yuri would open the store at 5:00 a.m. and close at 8:00 p.m.

His only companion was the store owner who became his mentor. One day, the man said, "Yury, what are your next steps."

"I want to stay in this country, but it's roadblock after roadblock."

"What would be one thing that you would really want to do while you're here?"

"I want to learn public relations from American professors."

"What are you waiting for?

"Money."

Yury's mentor urged him to give it a shot anyway. A month later, the young Russian student held two acceptance letters in his hand — one from a pricey private school that looked intriguing.

His mentor wrote a $10,000 check and handed it to Yury. "Make me proud."

Today, Yury serves as AVP of Customer Experience at Machias Savings Bank and is building Fast Forward Maine, a platform for an online growth summit.

In this episode, we talked about Yury's personal story, how he developed Fast Forward Maine, and why he's excited about the future.
